Dr. Sasha Pesci recently started her new position as an Assistant Professor of Sustainability, focused on eco-agriculture and sustainable food systems at Hofstra University.

Also, the first chapter of her dissertation titled, "A digital divide in direct market farmers’ online sales and marketing: Early pandemic evidence from California." was just published in the Journal of Rural Studies. (link: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jrurstud.2023.103038)

The AGU would like to recognize the outstanding work of Emma Forester (GGG PhD student) as a participant in our 2023 Voices for Science cohort. The AGU Voices for Science program was launched in 2018 to equip scientists with valuable communications and outreach skills, enabling them to engage with a variety of audiences, from legislators to the public. We are thrilled to have Emma join our community of over 180 past and present Voices for Science fellows. 

Dr. Alfonso Aranda was promoted from a Gerardo Marín Postdoctoral Fellow to Assistant Professor (for the ’23-24 AY with potential renewal) in the Department of Environmental Studies at University of San Francisco. Dr. Aranda is scheduled to teach undergraduate courses on food systems, nature and society, and environmental health while publishing dissertation material and exploring new research opportunities in the Central Valley. 

In September 2023 Gwyneth M. Manser will be starting a position as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences Washington State University. The position will focus on farmer decision making and environmental impacts of California strawberry production.

Congratulations to Indu Roychowdhury for winning a 2023 National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) award. The five-year fellowship provides three years of financial support and annual stipend of $37,000. The NSF GRFP is prestigious, highly competitive, and a significant national accomplishment.

Geography Graduate Group PhD Candidates received three awards at the 2023 California Geographical Society conference in Los Angeles, CA.  Clancy McConnell received the geosystems award.  Ryan Miller received first place in the graduate student paper award and Mitchell Snyder received second place in the graduate poster competition.  

Bernardo “Bernie” Bastien-Olvera, a recent Ph.D. graduate from the Geography Graduate Group at UC Davis, is this year’s recipient of the Kinsella Memorial Prize for his doctoral research on the effects of climate-driven impacts on global ecosystems and the influence on human well-being.
